We’ve all got to have kicks to get us from A to B.

No Smoking on Facebook, #SherlockHolmes + 4 Sets of Flickr_Kicks

Another Year Bites the Dust!

Was about to write a blog post about how I have successfully given up smoking* EXTRA BIG DISCLAIMER : Saying in a public, indexed forever by google format, that u have given up smoking is worse than The Facebook not assisted Suicide Machine, as - as soon as u say I HAVE GIVEN UP SMOKING, HOW FKN AMAZING AM I - Well, the resultant 3 LITTLE THUMBS UP LIKED U ON FACEBOOK and yer steely resolve to in fact kick the fag stix - could well make u start smoking again.

So Many Choices on Google Australia to "Quit Smoking"

So Many Choices on Google Australia to "Quit Smoking"

So wanting to not blog as a catalyst for the chain reaction of 3 as close to human passivity as u can get, one finger barely depressed, “clicks” AKA 3 PEOPLE IN LIKE WITH YOU FOR PROFESSING YOUR SUCCESSFUL DEBUNDLING OF NICOTINE from your daily routine.. most likely family and significant others.. I decided to avoid the Facebook Non-Smoking Judgement Day and work on my flickr sets.

I was just adding descriptions to my flickr set(s). Y’know, a sentence or two, describing… THE SET. As opposed to A COLLECTION; Which appears to be a FkU Super Aggregate COLLECTION of sets. So I could for example have a Collection called SNEAKERS or FOOTWEAR or in 09′parlance KICKS or maybe I’d go for something mysterious, comic, that could become a Facebook group in itself.

U gotta think bout these things, when u r not writing a blog post about successfully not smoking, the first time. Not a drag since midnite NYE when girlfriend and mother plus some crazy near retirement age Scots’ are pumping out at Full Volume the Bag Pipes, backed up by Xylophone, Maracas, and other bangable stuff..

Just as I’m glad Silent Witness has returned for its 13th Season, in which a UK Forensics Team led by Doctor Harry in a Coma (every1 in the show is either a Doctor, Professor.. or harlet murdering women…) I’m also going to use the Silent Witness Technique of merging the two parallel stories into one aggregate story, when at a point : Usually at the end of Episode One (all are 2 parters) the stories merge. So too here, the Descriptions I annotated on Flickr.. ended up being (as they werent twitter consistent capped at the length of 140 characters text message) I just kept writing crap. Not to mention I spent the last of my cumulative savings $25USD on maintaining flickrpro account: Or else they would have left me with 200 photos maximum and enough gigage to last a few days. Given they deleted my original Flickr! account.. I’ll keep it pro.. and hope I’m off their Turn up in the Middle of the Night and Take Me Away to the Digital Attic in the Dollhouse.. never to see my only copy of photos from 2004-8 given my 2 harddrives on 2 imacs died 2009.

But lets not kick this on2 a downer or I wont even get to 3 FB-likes as mentioned at commencement’ere : I was trying to not relapse from smoking given its now the 11th day of not smoking.. and having prevented or at minimum - stalled : The 3 Likes (but likely no comments) on Facebook.. which could have had me hanging of the edge.. a bit like Sherlock Holmes, which I watched last nite and really did quite enjoy after all! If not seeing at cinema, make sure u get Sherlock Holmes TS XVID- IMAGiNE version.

2009 FLICKR_KICKS_SETS .

Set #1 : Common Projects

Number of Photos : (Only) 170

Common Projects Summer Achilles luv the black model ere

Typical Price of Item : 200 quid up to $480USD + shipping for the killa boots they have.

Interesting sole colour n material on Common Projects Summer Achilles in white

Best etailers to secure from : Revolve, Oki-Ni

Still love these they cost $472USD/$510AUD - Common Projects Training Boot Low Profile Dirty in Black: Is it worth paying more for black ? :)

If these $830AUD kicks dont make enough statement throw in the leopard and pony skin every1 will give u an opinion - guaranted prob more bad than good Diet Butcher Slim Skin High Top Special Sneaker - but that may make u want them even more

Flickr Description :I’ve been very close to buying a pair of Common Projects, but then something new, shiny and cheapier from another brand (AKA Supra or Undftd) will come along. But I’ve gotta get a pair of Common Projects in 2010. As they r classic better to buy when the previous season goes on sale.

The black nylon common projects safari boot - soft black nylon hi top upper with a simply laced vamp and matching black rubber sole

Currently I’m stalking the Common Projects Training Boot Series Black or Grey Distressed kick that are perfect : Zippered, studd’d, interesting sole, slim fitting hightop military influenced boot. Lets hope the $472USD ish they want will come down. But Common Projects lowcuts like above and mids are just as good. Their use of materials is bettered by non too.. When u see them in real life.. the Italian nappa leather is where (at least some) of your money goes. And innovation such as use of Nylon before other sneaker co’s use them. In fact Supra and others will often copy Common Projects a few seasons later. So really it’s just a case of how much to pay for what r probably best sneaker kicks out for under $500.”

1st time on sale at Revolve $331USD/$357AUD - Common Projects Training Boot Low Profile Dirty in Grey: Hate 2think Aust'RRP eg mid $600's- bargain vs Diet Butcher hehe! Which of 4 (Common Projects, Diet Butcher) boots here is best $ aside ?

Diet Butcher is one of those brands u ogle for years and save up for The Slim Skin Hi Top Special in Black 449 pounds may be nearly $1kAUD ok actually $830ish by the time it ships but heck it is amazing + gut feel they would get worn alot. Supposedly according to Mia Freedman u need to divide the number of times u wear something by its cost to get an understanding of its value.. or to understand how women think hehe (her paraphrased words!)

Set #2 : Supra Skytop II + TK Society

Number of Photos : 241 as they have been ridiculously tight in releasing pictures of the impending Skytop II model variations of which a few new ones are released in next week..

Typical Price of Item : The newest model eg Skytop II in black suede I wanna cop is $136USD + ship.. While they retail in the odd Aussie places to sell for nearer $300AUD - It means u r an idiot not to buy from overseas.

Best etailers to secure from : Revolve (limited stock but free international shipping for over $100USD orders i think), Karmaloop (20% code voucher which r everywhere works as gr8 discount if in the US or negates shipping cost which is expensive to Australia etc - however with 20% discount it means they dont get kicks the moment they r released…. so u need patience for this route) , PickYourShoes (get shoes pretty damn quick.), Factory413 (is Supras retail owned channel.. so they get product first… but watch shipping - if in US no probs : free shipping.. and u can find discount vouchers too - but international delivery is biggest ripoff ive ever seen/heard - $85 for first pair wtf !)

Flickr Description : “The New Supra Skytop II, of the non limited edition models (after 600 white/red/grey “Gradient” model went launch viral) are finally being released January 15th - The Navy/Gold on the Complex Magazine cover worn by scantily clad model are teh dopeness, but I’ll be copping like the above pictured Black Suede Skytop II’s. For a very fair $136. It’s my next sneaker watchlist acquisition - as I need some black hightops in suede too - Which will go with my awaiting arrival Triumvir Constantine Bomber/Baseball jacket in classy black and white piping. Not to mention its 43c/105+F ere so dont exactly need winter apparel ! Back to Supra, who just keep innovating and are well on the way to becoming the next Nike if they can keep rolling out as they r…

I still want the Burgundy TK Society to match my Parra jacket + Undefeated hoodie in burgundy.. but the Skytop II's have gone to top of line..,,,

Just gotta make sure they stay ahead of the European luxury game + setitup for the more affordable high volume sneakerheadkrazed American/Western/Asian markets.

The Supra TK Society Navy/Black were one TK joint Supra got tight; Perfect for blue or black jeans of course...

Just occasionally, they get their colours wrong - like the Supra TK Society which should be innovating alot with the Skytop II coming out.. instead not enough new TK Society product and what there is that’s being released is in aqua electric blue cracked leather with fluoro lime sole wtf ?

Supra Skytop II Gold_Black known as "Goldies" - While gold is over the top supposedly in person.. once they r worn in.. can look pretty fly.. for a white guy!

But that said no matter what, Supra just keep delivering killer affordable product that the Kanye West / Luis Vuitton + Lanvins are biting for their 5 - 7 x the price luxe sneaker hi-tops lines. The Skytop II + TK Society are the Air Jordans of the 2010’s / 21st Century Tens or whatevs they be dubbed.”

I like Skytop II via Supratalk Forums - Gradient version had worldwide release 600 individually numbered kicks were impossible to buy... and they didnt even have a Melbourne release *sadface*

Set #3 : Adidas Originals Kicks + Apparel

Number of Photos : 225 and will keep growing.. Star Wars about to ship.. for the @griffmiester n other Stormtroopers or Darth Vaders.

Darth Vader Adidas Originals ZX 8000 hehe

Adidas Originals StarWars Stormtroopers

Typical Price of Item : $70 for Adidas’ own kicks up to $150 for the collabs if u can get’em. Overall Adidas very affordable.

Best etailers to secure from : Size Online in UK have limited collabs of adidas..  then usual suspects.. MajorDC.com are goodEndClothing…

Flickr Description :The sneaker market must be one of the most innovative in the world. New product comes out everyday and goes direct to consumers who dissect, like or not, and etail channels get limited edition collaborative customised product that quickly sells at premium price$ to teenagers, X + Y’s, and baby boomers alike. Adidas via Adidas Originals premium line… developed many killa kicks of their own 2009 into 2010 and their breadth of collaborative kicks was second to none.

From the madness of Jeremy Scott Conductors to the minimalistic reinterpretation of Doc Martens by Undefeated cofounder James Bond for David Beckhams’ Adi-Originals Line.

Adidas just keep serving it up. Look at teh above pictured Adidas Porter collab based on the basic $75 RRPish Adidas Nizza Hi kick. Japanese luggage brand Porter just added a zip at the back and provided a carry bag for the easy to get off kicks (may sound like nothing to a non hightop wearing but at the end of day it can be a real hassle to get them off) So Porter nailed it for Adidas, with something as simple as a zip at back. Just as Ransom also nailed it…

adidas-ransom-valley-black- very common projectsy but alot cheaper :P

And Crooked Tongues with their Superstar interchangeable tongue 3-or-more-way collab. And now George Lucas is getting in on the Adidas Originals fun with the Star Wars collaboration. Beam Me Up, Scotty, as Adidas is exploring Space in 2010.”

Adidas Originals Highrise look good

Set #4 : The Others - Visvim, Playcloths, Crooks, Uniqlo, W+H, Blackbirds

Number of Photos : 645

Wings + Horn Archive Line- Full Zip Terry Hoodie made by CYCDesign.com in Canada, pre-buy of this W+H Archive FW 2010 line from Rodengray.com

Typical Price of Item : Could be anything… esp the Japanese…

Visvim FBT Folk UR still beautiful.. u japanese designed kick u.

Best etailers to secure from : So many brands so many outlets. Go direct to brand usually or the leading etailers - Karmaloop have most of streetwear eg Crooks, Blackbird in Seattle for highend stuff like Diet Butcher, Uniqlo, Playcloths, UnionLA ala the shoes below, 2 tone yeaaah etc.

Luv 2Tone Saddle Gibson in grey + blue Suede Saddle Shoe featuring a white brick sole + coordinating white eyelets

Flickr Description :It’s interesting to look retrospectively at teh products that have caught my eye in the last 12 months. Obvs I digg the Japanese designers ala Visvim.. if not be able to fit into the ultra small sizing hehe.. I seem to like simple clean European luxe essentials ala Lanvin or ultra affordable while high quality and unique : Uniqlo (their current J+ line with Jill Sander, into its 2nd season is awesome!)

"Navajo. Chimayo. Americana. It is through these three themes that best describes April77’s 2009-2010 Fall Winter Collection."

But u cant keep me away from throwing in Californian surfstreetwear or EastCoast winterwear : Ill take either with a quality twist - Whether it be Indian theme in the current April 77 collection which is jawdropping in parts (is it wearable tho… i think so ;) It’s also nice to look at again the original Crooks and Castles… where they did quality high impact jackets n hoods; They should take a lesson from the Canadian made Wings + Horn. Talk about quality, pity about price, small sizing and limited availability. Feel they have gone off quality and design now they are a growth story !

Now I’m really feeling the MishkaNYC crew and da Playcloths collective : With the killa heather grey wool varsity with the red piping and P logo on breast, 1977 datestamp, and excellent embroidery on back.. I just hope I can find one still around (they r pretty close to sold out from limited run that was sold online etc) in my size for 2010 Aussie Winter. It’s such a beautiful piece. (Its the thumbnail above for this set : The Others ! Guaranteed to be better than the Nicole Kidman Film) Finally I really want the 135 quid navy blue Chukkas. Or Grey Suede Vans Akats, drool double there too.”

Lots of good sales on atm… but being on a freelancers dont get paid over end of december, start of january.. all I can do is look at items from afar… One estore and sale I can recommend, is from euro Caliroots.com - Their stock is killa, limited edition, collaborations type product.. and the discounts r now steep. Damn finances. So I’ll share what I can’t procure myself.

Jeremy Scott Originals for Adidas Originals Spring Summer 2010 - and these r the less crazy pieces hehe

I try to rotate  the brands and colours I kicks I buy/wear so I dont end up with too many of same brand and colour (altho Supra + Undefeated r always going to get me…) One brand I dont have any of is Adidas, specifically Adidas Originals - who have come out with some of the best kicks of 2009 - 3 of the pairs - all low volume limited editions - I really want are very cheap and in my size, unfair.

adidas-originals-official-mid : Designed by Undefeated Cofounder James Bond for David Beckham line.. luv that they are styled on Doc Martens. Now 750 SEK or $116AUD around $100USD ish + shipping. Drool baad.

While on Ransom, I have to add these new killer Varsity jackets he has released… $160USD - so simple classic…. I like all colours but black/white hard to beat altho grey/white + navy/white challenge hehe

But if not the Ransom jacket, back to Caliroots, lets see what jackets they have on sale for cheap…

Levi’s Originals, like Adidas Originals is a brand I want to get into 2010.. even if it means mining 2009 stock for cheap sell-off of limited edition collabs. I esp want the Levis - Obey denim hoodies… which arent for sale at Caliroots (or via Levi.com dont sell to Australiabut u can find on eBay!)

And maybe I’ll end (how I started) with a couple more (Levis Originals) on sale items from Caliroots :

levis-originals-heavy-fade-shirt - simple yet kewl + at 399 Sek $61 AUD

twas hot last night

Soooo, Melbourne hovered around mid-20c’s last nite.. and after a kick yer fn ass + maybe burn the hair of yer hands when cooking quickly at 500c degrees Seafood BBQ thx to Tullys in Parkdale (open till 5pm 2day its this huge Aussie Italianish supermarket - with expert nannas working there : selling King Island steak, sooo damn huge Chicken skewers, these huge $90 lobster/crays (i was too scared to look at too long in case i looked in the sun/eclipse too long + turn in2 a zombie).. dont even start me on fresh produce / cheese/ bread/ veg but its only place that could make me vegetarian, king size kalamata olives wtfnoms) So was vhappy to pick up the blazing bright looks like redfin tuna Marlin (338 grams @ $31/kg for most amazing deep burgundy looking fillet), Prawn Skewers (some type of chilli + other stuff marinade i cant even explain but yum) at a $1.90 a pop (with one thrown in which brought average cost down to $1.30ea, bargain they rokd)  and (how could u not like/luv) Scallops (not sure price high $20s/kg but damn 180 grams at 2 minutes on barbie these killd) Thrown in some magic’bug’green been and potato’s (boiled then bbqd) salad.. well it was hot hog heaven for around $11.50 each. (not incl condiments/veg)

agreed

Seafood barbie was followed by Clint Eastwood’s up to his always high standards Invictus about Nelson Mandella and the 1995 Rugby World Cup, starring Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman. You can grab’ere. Anyways, we didnt get to Avatar but are aiming to get a 1pm session today… in the meantime I’ve been up early at Combi Coffee which I recommend, on Ormond Rd.. but thought I’d knock out a Polyvore set as it’s been awhile between innings.. Beware though, the street fashion ur about to see is Soooooo 2009!

Tweetie Killed RSS

2

I don’t blog anymore. Much easier to read my 4k google reader feeds via Feedly.com, Tweetie 2.1, Mobile-RSS + Byline Apps, then press retweet on the ipod touch.

(update 1 : I wrote this post one week ago after having saved it as a draft… but it wouldnt publish for some unidentified Wordpress HTML errors… just another reason why it’s hard to blog + easy to tweetie) So this post is 2 weeks late / 3rd time lucky... the path of least resistance eh! But we also know nothing of value is easy… (update 2: i’ve lost most of the post, but more the annotations… which was 80% of entry.. but ive added some more diatribe in to even it all up)

It seems the majority of people I speak to now believe Twitter has trumped RSS in terms of their own online subscription/reading behaviour : I’m constantly told Twitter has replaced their RSS reader, which basically means google reader unless they were Windows users on Newsgator. In one way this stupefies me as the content I get out of greader is so much richer, niche, less populist etc : I subscribe to product threads from forums; Twitter feeds on clothing brands and camera make/models. I watch regional low readership blogs on denim, kicks brands, cars etc - I dont see any of this content on Twitter; Twitter, even with the very basic lists (Lists by definition include all the entries from individuals…) but most people tweet about a range of things in their life.. so Lists without filtering to me is a pretty noisy place…

OK for some verticals like technology and breaking news Twitter and lists can work… but crappy (well lists are anyway) if I want to follow updates on the Canon S90 + G11s + Panasonic GF1 compact cameras - which Twitter saved searches works - Altho can u believe they are limited to 10 ? WTF I follow 4k feeds in greader incl all my twitter product and brand related saved searches and priority users I want coming into my feedly interface. Not to mention feedly gives me additional analytic like # of clicks from my twitter… (feedly being my main interface for reading content while on desktop then tweetie 2.1 and mobile rss on the ipod touch : as it has direct to twitter tweeting of entries from google reader, as well as shared items integration, while Byline and NetNewsWire have sharing but not twitter integration). However they are far weaker experiences than Tweetie is - Which I hope aims to move up the value chain and become a content platform for a range of web services such as google reader and re-aggregators like feedly; Let tweetie let feedly work on representing google reader so it looks better and has more analytics and tools than the barren greader.

When it gets down to the links I see being shared on Twitter from the 1700 decent enough people I follow - It generally reflects populist “early majority (not adopter)” types of people about what’s hot on news.com.au, digg.com, techmeme.com etc : This may be harsh, maybe it’s slightly more high end from that; And of course, Twitter breaks news; And often does so from insiders like we saw in Australia with journalists tweeting minute by minute changes in leadership before their own employer is able to get the information packaged up and delivered to market (via major public and private newspaper, radio, TV  was able to break the story) But (outside of tech/startups etc which i think where Scoble gets confused) Twitter does not give me everything I need; More like 17%.

So it seems we have some contradictory, dysfunctional human behaviour to understand whether RSS is dead (it isnt) Matt Mullenwegg well dealt with the fact that Wordpress or “mega-blogging” didnt kill Twitter or micro-blogging - That it was an “and” not “or” dichotomy. So when The Scoble + other like ego-life-narcisso-streams of android vs iphone pumped ambient noise pushed to self serving regurgitating autofollowers about whether Twitter killed blogging, rss, or google reader (the answer wails the bluesy chorus of “no, no, no”)

So *my  hypothesis* (i think) for purposes of a soundbite is “Tweetie killed RSS” - until some automagician can develop a next gen post 2 dimensional bland, no longer solely chronological, not as linear, not as web based, more mobile personalised zeitgeist that accelerates the path of least resistance - rather than bloat the path of too many unread irrelevant items; And makes it fun! Why cant u shake your iphone/mouse/trackpad to get a fascinating hot new item + then clap twice to have it retweetered ?

Just as the email inbox is busted + u have a whole bunch of new gist, xobni types social network + friend filtering in your inbox - so too does RSS need a bullshit detecting - this post is spam so dont get all angsty about not reading it.. in fact why even present the item to the touchscreener if it doesnt first meet the user rules; i’ve got 5 minutes in the morning before work + I need to know insider industry news - and not what every1 else has. Or I’ve got a 40 minute post work commute, so layer me up some entertainment’y not work offline sync’d streams. And let’s face it : The battleground is getting a good handset version… as the web has feedly and google reader.. but the mobile, iphone, blackberry etc only has some average free-$2.99 apps. There is no tweetie yet.

Also one week later - The Glee finale was satisfying enough - Grab it here if so inclined. But back to RSS vs Twitter vs the end of the larger than 140 character writing or reading : Worse than not blogging : If i go outside my own ‘in the industry friends’ + there is The Real Time Web Scoble Gilmor RSS is dead bandwagon who dont bother to read feeds anymore; “My friends on twitter will link to the top stories” - Sorry to disappoint u ppl but u (or i anyway) aint gonna get yer nourishment from a shared 122 times on google reader / retweeted 48 times / high ranking Digg.com/TechMeme.com piece. From her to eternity: the phrase is an epitaph for Cave’s career. He has sculpted for himself, very deliberately, the mask of a timeless artist. Fully embraced now by both the tastemakers and the gatekeepers of Australian cultural life, his ascendancy has been enabled by a metaphorical pile of female corpsesThe Monarch of Middlebrow

Not that I’m totally arguing against Twitter’s pull in replacing blogging and RSS; As mentioned I dont blog anymore esp when I can micro-blog. Steve Jobs taught me Smaller is Better. And the endpoint of small… is pretty much invisiblity : AKA where my blogging is. Ipod begat Ipod Mini and I’m sure Iphone will begat Iphone Mini. So blogging begat twitter, twitter begat foursquare and RSS is dead, not.

First some cutnpaste of an essay i found via @jessmcguireCave now occupies a curious position in Australian culture. Rather than the Black Crow King of his own imagination, he’s more the Monarch of Middlebrow. His likeness hangs in the National Portrait Gallery; his journals displayed at the National Library. His headline appearances bankroll summer music festivals and arts festivals alike while his early solo albums have been reissued in deluxe packages. You can buy his lyrics as a Penguin paperback. He is a cover star of weekend newspaper supplements and most recently of the Monthly, that over-earnest, reliably dull bush telegraph of all that is causing mild consternation among the nation’s opinion columnists. The Monarch of Middlebrow

I’ve spent 5 years building up a list of RSS subscriptions. If I had to just survive on Twitter links for my reading nourishment I’d fkn die; A bunch of social media consultants latest quasi-to-non-disclosed viral social linkbait, no thx. “‘Where the Wild Roses Grow’ exemplified Cave’s ambiguous attitude to the music industry, and particularly to success in his home country. He accepted his 2007 induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame while maintaining a haughty contempt towards the honour; he dismisses song writing as ‘woman’s work’ while regularly expounding upon the elevating notion of his ‘muse’, who seems not to mind a chart success or two; and he has become determined during recent years to shape for himself, as he admitted frankly in his interview with Good Weekend, a legacy in the country that he left behind nearly thirty years ago.” The Monarch of Middlebrow

To summarise this post for the 140 character generation : I want a sexed up Feedly/Postrank/GoogleReader shape shifted into the svelte Tweetie 2.1 body - that allows me to swipe, shake + flick my reactions to grown up longer than 140 character generated content. Then RSS will live, long live the feed king. Until then Parra believes the Paper Zine will come backand by entering market well before Apple’s 10.1 inch tablet… Steve Jobs may not have enough in him to go the long distance with Parra.. It may become a Paper vs RSS fight after all…

To leave my blog : Why not check out my Gourmet flickrstream kickslust… or maybe it’s actually luv when u throw in UNDFTD… like the above Gourmet X Undftd Quattro’s from UNDFTD Silverlake but not online!) Or maybe u prefer some Adidas Originals.. I know want some of those soon.. the cherry Official Mid ones by the UNDFTD Founder (James Bond - how kewl is that as a name.. a name: naff but also a superspy) or the Charcoal zip up Forum Mids, army influenced Nom De Guerres or totally sold out Adi Nizza Hi in Black - Porter collab with zip at back.. Or the below likely vexpensive deconstructed distressed Damir Doma Silent Assasins… now that’s a kewl name for some kix with steeze.

“… The Pump technology has been described as innovative, unique and ground-breaking, but those words don’t even begin to measure up to exactly what it’s all about. After 20 years, The Pump technology still reigns as one of the most innovative footwear technologies ever made.

So, beginning November 20, 2009, Reebok will kick-off a year-long celebration of the 20th anniversary of The Pump technology. The celebration begins by bringing back The Pump, the shoe that started it all, and continues in 2010 with a celebration of some of our most iconic models….”  From: Reebok’s Pump20.com

Reebok Pump Product Designer in Sneaker Freaker Issue 16 : "When I did the Pump in 1988 and ‘89 as the project manager, we also had Hexalite and Graphlite. We had the second generation of ERS as well, so we created four new technologies out of a really small group."

Like alot of sneakerheads, I still remember the various models of sneakers I had at different ages. Just as automotive marketing of high powered sports cars often relies on selling u the car u dreamt of as a teenager (Mustang, 911, Monaro, Camaro, etc) so does the leisure footwear industry like to sell u not what u dreamt of as a teenager, but the actual sneaker u did wear, or a modern interpretation thereof.

Paul Litchfield at Reebok (Continued...) in Sneaker Freaker - "The Pump Shot and the Pro Pump were the first shoes that we showed at the Atlanta Super Show in February of 1989. Myself and Duncan Scott and the guys at Design Continuum worked on these. This is the pump on the back of the heel and this little valve is the same as a bicycle tyre. They were a colossal pain in the ass. The pump bladder itself goes up the tongue and around the whole shoe and then around your ankle. When you pumped it, you could feel it!"

I can still recite many of the kicks I had when a teen- I was definitely in the Nike (not Reebok) camp; I had many variations on the Nike Cross Trainer : The SC with Velcro / Bo Jackson models.. Now called Cross Trainer 2+3s : Later there were runners; Nike 180’s when they came out; Air Max 95s; ACG Air Challenge, etc etc.

Reebok know what they are doing with social media : You couldnt pay yer PR firm enough to successfully get independent authority social media 'on target' social media commentators like SidewalkHustle.com to say for free: "What better way to celebrate a 20 year anniversary of a culturally significant and iconic shoe then by throwing a party in every major city all over the world with some of the worlds greatest musicians, free booze and incredible shoes!? The 20th Anniversary party for the iconic Reebok Pump, was one of the best and well thought out publicity events I have been to in a long time, and to honour the people who made the shoe a success, Reebok had 20 different sneaker boutiques across the globe create their own unique version of the shoe. This makes complete sense to me, as these shops are the ones selling the shoes to the niche market they are part of, so who better to know what exactly their target audience would want. Also having an open bar sponsored by some of the finer brands of alcohol and having legendary hip hop performers and DJ’s in no way hurts. Until the next morning of course, when the ringing in your head just won’t stop."

In a sense, Nike has been ahead of the game in developing new versions of old kicks. Sometimes it creates hybrids of 2 popular models. Other times it releases the shoe pretty much exactly as was. Reebok, maybe similar to late 80’s/early 90’s : was chasing Nike. And The Pump was the shoe that helped them combat AIR :P

Undefeated Blog : " Last Friday at UNDFTD Silverlake held host for the 20 year anniversary of the Reebok Pump. A collaboration shoe coined the "Raincheck" was debuted which was crafted out of water proof nylon material. 2 other colorways of the Pump Hi were also released that evening called the "Bringbacks"."

UNDFTD PUMP 20 rox - navy + yellow r friends. Also good way to own Los Angeles Sneakerheadz

But increasingly, to really compete, and create the supercar at the top of the range, which other models are then mass produced from… sneaker companies are bringing in outsiders to develop their new lines. In a way much of this so far has been leading edge consumer theory, niche markets leading to early adopters, and using buzz to create top level brand positivity.

Huf locks up SanFrancisco Hipsters for Reebok via HufSF Blog : "Releasing Nov. 21st 2009 only at HUF Hayes Valley. Only 31 pairs available, all pairs are numbered."

Note the Individual Numbering + Details like 2 tone/gradient'd laces.

However, The current 20th Anniversary Reebok Pump Campaign goes to the next level - Rather than just doing one collaboration with a leading sneaker retailer with aspirations and skills in front end sneaker design - Reebok targeted many (if not all but a large percentage) of the major hip sneaker retailers ; Most of which possessed the following characteristics;

1. Track Record in Sneaker Collaboration with major Sporting Brands ie the company partnered with knew what they were doing.

2. Physical outlet and logistics systems : They dealt with real businesses with real customers and employees. They were able to run events, market, customer service and fulfill.

3. Strong Online Presence : Sneakerheads from all around the world goes to the websites and online communities to find the new daily releases of sneakers and associated clothing/accessories from these brands. They are twittered about in their own right and basically gods in their own city when it comes to leisurwear on the feet.

The Pumps may have sold out in London in Minutes but the promotion for London with the parallel promo parties - unbeatable brand marketing

The Pumps may have sold out in London in Minutes but the promotion for London with the parallel promo parties - unbeatable brand marketing

From my recollection, there hasnt been a larger number of collaborations, in as many continents, with as many retailers with as much online and physical reach as Reebok has achieved with it’s Pump 20th anniversary campaign. Not only did it lock in the major players in each market; It ran major party events with artists, graff, dj’ing, performance art, free drinks… and the ability for the invited TO BUY THE PUMP COLLABd SNEAKERS. Forget about giveaway.. no1 is going to drop 150 quid/$165USD - then write about it on their blog.. if they are given away for free…. The sneakers had to be good… and most importantly extremely limited.

“Taking on a Fall/Winter theme, the main ideology behind the design is a sneaker that will keep you warm and dry through the harsh weather conditions. Uppers feature a Nubuck and Wool combo with hiking-style lace hooks, interior Thinsulate lining, and Reebok Play Dry moisture technology. Adding some vibrant highlights, the shoes also boast safety orange accenting with side text reading Alltid Redo (Always Ready), which is the Swedish Scout motto. Only 31 pairs will be released on November 20th, all equipped with four set of special laces, including a Dark Grey, Light Grey, Orange, and multi-color utilizing the same SNS pattern used within in the insoles.” From Hypebeast

From SneakersNStuff the Stockholm Collabtailer : ""We started working on this project over a year ago + it hasn’t always been easy to try to get Reebok to understand what we are trying to do. And now, when the shoes are finally ready – Reebok accidently put the shipment on a boat instead of an airplane"

So each pair was designed by the hottest designers in each market and numbered individually… and mostly limited to a run of 29 to 31 pieces… 200 Collabs X 30 pieces on average = estimated 600 sneakers.. which is a fairly similar run to the Kanye West X Nike Yeezy production numbers : But while the Yeezy only had 3 different versions, designed by 1 IMMALETUFINISH : The 2009 Pump 2.0 - had 20 geographically localised versions. Now I’d still prob prefer a pair of Black/Magenta Yeezy’s - but Reebok’s buzz generation and general Google Page Rank and PR Brand Building goodness cannot be underestimated..

NiceKicks.com : "The uppers are done with heather grey, much like you’d find on your favorite hoodie. To compliment that, royal blue has been used throughout, as a splatter on the laces, and also for the upper accent pieces and outsole. And of course these have the Pump system, so you can always tighten them up to get them fitting tight, or just so you can let them loose and hear that “psssttt” sound."

The Colette Kix are sold out of course... but the French know how to party... hip hop, DJs, graff, freestyling.... all around the Reebok Pump... textbook noughties marketing.

So if u look at all the buzz Reebok achieved via their Pump 20th anniversary relaunch : It’s been off the hook: World’hour twitter buzz about Reebok Pump.

I’m just annoyed I couldn’t get a pair as while Sydney (Espionage) and Asia (Atmos-Tokyo) got collab sneakers and kicks, Melbourne didnt + Oh well, another day, another new UNDFTD X Gourmet collab kick, and I dont have any white in my sneaker range after all. And sometimes NEW NEW trumps NEW OLD. While Reebok may leverage the collabtailers : After a few times around the block it may be The New Kid wants to become The King. But atm, no1’s complaining….

Sneaker Freaker on the Sydney Espionage collab party : "The global Pump20 party touched down in Sydney with Espionage pulling the curtain back to reveal their black and white patent Pumpers! It was a chilled affair with the local clientele being treated to fine tunes, even finer brews and the odd giveaway or two."

Dont mind the Espionage Pump... but typically I'm besotted by the West Coast Navy/Yellow UNDFTD + HUFs plus the Euro Heather Grey of SNS/Colette.fr - But Sydney did beat Melbourne with our city deprived of any opportunity to procure kicks + based that they never really went for online sale - as each collab was only around 29-31 pairs.. 1 SYD / 0 MEL

Reebok's Google PageRank juice after this assault on social media is going to be off the hook - Heck if they had paid 600 bloggers to take the Pumps - they would have got less promotion. But by restricting supply + bringing in the cache rich / cashpoorer / consumer high sneaker retailers who want to be sneaker designers... they have the "target market" tweeting / blogging / facebooking away

It's all about restricting supply to a unique product and increasing buzz on said product ! But why is it that the sneaker company - the brand custodian, cant do as good a job as an outsider, that is the crux which is interesting....

The elixir call of sleep, definitely need that 2nite… 2nd day in a row of the commute.. A few hundred kilometres later I’m glad it’s Friday... till it starts again the next day.. So after all the driving didn’t have enough petrol to get to gym or an open post 5pm servo - And I felt like a bit of non unleaded petrol oxygen, so a quick skip down the beach (would prefer the Air Maxim Patta above or standard issue), except my current Air Max Safaris have holes in both the toes and worn out sole.

So after spending the night listening to the audio transistor of Blues upstage faultering Cats, a bit of pre-bed #BurnNotice S3E9 (and Holly Hunter’s quirky rowdy cop meets angel interfacing #SavingGrace) hits the spot. Thx gawd Strickler has been dealt with.

Long Way Back

Aired: Aug/06/2009
Michael is forced to team up with Fiona’s brother in order to save her from a dangerous man from her past.

3 new Supra TK Society, my current kick in Charcoal Patent, are out - The Burgundy is prob my fave and the Midnight Blue/Black is Killer too.

Just when I thought there couldn’t be any more new kicks - 2 of my fave brands - Undefeated + Gourmet have a collab soon to be release via SneakerNews : “Gourmet gussied up some of their truly original models this spring by crafting them from epi leather. The coarse material famous from use in French luggage has become their new favourite thing, as evinced by this latest new silhouette. We don’t know the name of this new sneaker yet, but it’s likely to have a big launch because of the world-class collaborator in tow. The white upper has Undefeated’s unmistakable tally on the outer ankles, adding depth to the design that includes a black sole and tongue with red laces. We’ll keep you updated with more info, including a name and release date.”

From the Sperry Topsider site - the Band of Outsiders collab : They might need some help with the copy, its a gr8 product : “In collaboration with Scott Sternberg from Band of Outsiders, Sperry is offering this limited edition style that gives an edge to its Authentic Original with suede fabrics and laceless styling. Still providing wave-siped, non-marking outsoles your feet will be fashionable on the boardwalks of the islands and the big city streets.”

BAND OF OUTSIDERS - CHUKKA BOOT  : “Again, Band has teamed up with Sperry Top Sider, the company with black belt in boat shoes. Chukka boot meets boat shoe and the color is called cracked Champagne. I would call it grey but hey. All suede, rubber sole and lined with striped cotton. White stitches on the top and the red and yellow laces makes them perfect.” - Unfortunately the yellow laces cost $67 more.. amazing how different the photos look..

SupraTalk on the BlueBlack TK’s : “Terry Kennedy has been turning heads in the Blue Black TK Society colorway for quite a while and today we can bring you a closer look at this sneaker. The first thing you notice when you pick this TK Society up is how soft the leather is and the distinct shine the black and blue leather upper has. Again this TK Society comes with a black and white vulcanized sole and white wax laces. The Blue Black TK Society is easily our most favoured of the upcoming TK Society releases..”

SupraTalk Burgundy are prob my faves of new season TKs: “The Burgundy TK Society consists of an all Burgundy Leather Upper with a black and white vulcanised sole topping this sneaker off. The Burgundy TK Society also comes with white wax laces. No complaints about this sneaker, it adds another mature leather colorway to the Supra lineup.” (YouTube clip on the TK Society Burgundy)

Supra TK Society Black Suede Kicks on SupraTalk :The Black Suede TK Society has been one of the more anticipated upcoming colorways from Supra, with a lot of Black Croc Skytop fans looking to upgrade. The upper consists entirely of smooth black suede, with the monochrome color scheme continuing into the vulcanized sole. Extra white wax laces are also included in the package.”

I could talk about the near perfect atlantic salmon fillets from the Amazing Italian Crack Supplier in Parkdale on Nepean Hwy. 7 minutes on a bbq (they were thick…) and washed down with a 567ml pint of Little Creatures Pale Ale from Fremantle.. well it was a nice post gym meal. Even if some kitties had a hard day of it… it will get better !

Got a truckload of deliverables tomorrow/well um today…. and better get to bed.. so u will have to make do with pictures.. pretty soon I will be getting rid of the pictures from blogging.. and it will just be a canvas of white… although I guess this blog is published on a black background, so I guess it might end up being like some of Rothko’s darker work.

The Michael Jackson Deal via LA Times : “Under terms of a 2002 will Jackson signed, his mother and three children receive a combined 80% of his assets, with the remainder going to several unnamed children’s charities. In the deal with Columbia — a division of entertainment giant Sony Corp., which distributes Jackson’s music as an adult solo performer — Jackson’s estate would receive 90% of any movie profit and the rest would go to AEG. A final cut of the film must be screened for representatives of his estate no later than Oct. 2, must be rated PG and cannot include material that “presents Michael Jackson in a negative light,” the contract says. There are plans for a movie soundtrack as well as a director’s cut DVD and two special editions of the film after its theatrical run. The documents also stipulate that Branca, Jackson’s longtime entertainment attorney, and McClain, a family friend, can produce at least one tribute concert to the singer as long as the broadcast does not interfere with the film’s release. ”

Google brand is worth $100 Billion Dollars Please… Just let me clip that intangibles ticket… And Twitter’s capital city is London - Both Techcrunch say…

Gotta get me some of those Supra NS Strapped Wildlife  below now they are out… maaaaad… but then I want the Gourmet Diecis above… choice$ choice$… oh well not exactly my next purchase anyway in a land of milk and honey. Suffice to say Gourmet and Supra are on top of the sneaker crossover chukka game - esp given they are selling product in the $70-$140USD price range which the highest of luxury euro brands arent doing for $400-$1000 - even stellar brands like Common Projects or Lanvin.

The best kicks are (not wikipedia links*) Gourmet and Supra, fullstop. Check the materials and details. Basically every shoe on this post are one of the two brands… and just a limited selection of the current fall lines… As these are new brands.. they dont have to continually go back and again to retro-ise Air Max / Force 1 / Cross Trainer / Adidas Superstar / Puma Mids / NBs - etc as much as like em all.. These brands are doing fresh… and that’s somehow just how u gotta roll… Like a Zebra with laces that dont go straight… strategy is all zigzag after all.. u have to constantly replot how to get from A to B.. as long as u know where B is.. OMG i just regressed into a deep Six Sigma repressed abuse memory where management consultants planted a deep memory.. How fresh are these Gourmet’s below ? Maybe with this matching kinda jacket ?

Love that Rupe wants to get Google to pay for all that content they gnewsmaybe GOOG will ask for a cost per click for each unique user returned back. From Paid Content : “The News Corp chairman and CEO told analysts and reporters during the Q4 earnings call: “We intend to charge for our news websites. The Wall Street Journal‘s WSJ.com is the world’s most successful paid news site and we will be using our profitable experience there and the resulting unique skills throughout News Corp (NYSE: NWS). to increase our revenues from all our content.” Murdoch cited the arrival of Jon Miller as chief digital officer and his work “leading a company-wide effort to establish a new economic model to profitably transition our print properties to digital.””

* is it just me who gets sick of wikipedia links being used as kinda smartass explanation…. there really should be a facebook group for that - if  i wanted an education… i would have bought a skool… says he who uses wikipedia links.. but i annoy myself anyway.. and wikipedia links in moderation… and in lieu of no other options for linkage… It’s really the gift voucher of linking… better than a google spam seo link… but still it aint no silver kicks present u r into..

St Kilda Hump Day

So a day in St Kilda of meetings, emails, documents, commuting… and shin splints where I need some high tech meets retro design runners, pref Asics Runovation from Europe, but the simple Nike Air Maxim reinterpretation with the latest Flywire technology aint bad. That bigger than original air bubble can do magic things for running. Nike via SneakerFreaker :

nike-air-maxim

‘”We took the original Air Max 1 design brief and ran it through a present-day filter,” says Nike Sportswear Design Director Jesse Leyva. “We tried to solve the very same problems Tinker Hatfield did with the technology of that time, using the technologies and Nike sporting innovations of today and tomorrow.” Like Hatfield, Leyva and his design team focused on lightweight stability and cushioning. The result is a staggering 66% weight reduction from the original, with the Air Maxim coming in at a mere 10.1 ounces. This dramatic weight reduction can be attributed to several key features: Introduction of the innovative Acespan Mesh, a lightweight material developed for the 2008 Nike LunaRacer-coupled with Flywire Technology-that debuted in the 2008 Zoom Victory Spike, the lightest, strongest running spike ever made. It drastically reduces weight while creating an upper that moves with the foot and is stronger than ever. Deployment of a three-piece injected Phylon midsole, optimizing cushioning and support. Use of lightweight screen-printed Swoosh design trademark and eyelet details, which further reduces the overall weight. From the turf to the court to the street, the Air Maxim 1 is set to let you perform on air in any situation. To ensure that its heritage remains true, the Air Maxim 1 still features its trademark suede heel counter and rand in original Sport Red, a revolution in its own right back in 1987.”

Oh look at that view.. memories!!! Saw #FunnyPeople last night, wasn’t bad, vwatchable.. it was no Punch Drunk Love.. but prob Adam Sandler’s closest type of pic; “Fuck Facebook” was funny tho. George Simmons: And I enjoy all of your movies.
Dr. Lars: [surprised] Which movies?
George Simmons: The ones where you try to kill Bruce Willis.

George Simmons: So, Ira Wright? That’s not your real name. You’re hiding some Judaism.
Ira Wright: I don’t think I can hide that. My face is circumcised.

Liking the Etsy Integration onto Facebook - Wonder how many years for Aussie product managers to follow this lead, via AllFacebook : Via Etsy Product Manager - “Sean Flannagan: Items on Etsy are unique, one-of-a-kind, often amazing and often discovered through people – whether through word of mouth, an article on a blog, a passed link on Twitter or a favorite seller’s personal Favorites. While there are many microbrands on Etsy, the items are not branded in the traditional way and don’t benefit from traditional brand advertising. They’re handmade by real people, and the best way to make discoveries on Etsy is often through other people. Most of the items I’ve purchased on Etsy were not things I was specifically looking for; they were discovered or recommended by someone in my world. (Example: I wasn’t in the market for this hand-cranked wooden boat automata from cartoonmonster, but once a friend pointed it out to me I had to buy it.) Making it easy to enable those kinds of social discoveries on Facebook, where social connections are being harnessed so effectively, is a natural step for us. Etsians love to share finds and curate lists of favorite items, and Facebook makes it easy to share things with large groups of friends.”

The new Kerry Packer isn’t James Packer but Kerry Stokes. Or Maybe it’s all about Matt Preston ? Seems your first name is a more important determinant of media concentration of power downunder via The Rupe owned Australian; “If it’s television, call Kerry Stokes. Our spies say the one-time Perth aerial installer turned media mogul just can’t keep his fingers off television stations. Ten’s $138 million capital raising looks set, we hear, to feature a Stokes/KKR (read Seven Media) connection in the small print, giving him a startling spread of free-to-air and cable interests in Australia. Seven? Control, tick. Consolidated Media? Just under 20 per cent, tick. So what about a lash at Ten? It’s not as though he’s the least informed investor to have a dabble there: step forward the Lowy family. He’s limited to 15 per cent, were he so inclined, since Australia’s not Italy when it comes to media ownership. Ten’s raising is being tagged the MasterChef issue. Back in February when it was raining dunnies, investors put their fingers in their ears and sang “I’m not listening” when Citi sought to tap the market at around 70c a share. Now it’s a scramble for stock in the issue being handled by Macquarie at $1.15 a pop, an 8.4 per cent discount to its closing price of $1.255 on Monday. What a difference a market recovery makes but it’s not just that. Ten’s blockbuster MasterChef started in April…”
