So I’m trying to get my stuff in order and am imbued with entrepreneurship being about creating something out of nothing; More from less; And all those other appropriate cliches. Either way I’m having real troubles with my building blocks. Should be glad it’s January n’all but it will be more normal in February, and I really need to finish the feature I’m currently delivering, which everytime it gets closer it gets further away. I’m listening to customers like the just closed $10m in new funding Newsgator does, but that doesnt translate into being easy to get internal tehnical buy in. So prima facie, it was kinda scary when I first saw RWW’s ‘R.I.P Enterprise RSS’ headline - When everything I’d read about Newsgator’s feed throughput + monetisation was+is totally kickn goalz!?

I see Newsgator funding as a healthy positive statement on the company and industry and less as an admission of technorati like questionable future with an out of date product mix - Newsgator isn’t that : It’s one of those hypergrowing company with an awesome (3.5) million feeds + (3) billion feeds items running on a cross platform black box with plugged in widgets, whether it’s Facebook or a newspaper’s blog; Plug that into an awesome list of Fortune 100/1000 customers and (depending on turnover, growth, profitability timing etc) that’s a valuation is in the hundreds of millions and requires expansion capital : With 9m new items a day in the system you need great and expanding tech infrastructure, then you want sales teams to monetise that content, the platform, the widget plugins and so on.

Then you gotta productise read 401K product and project managers, finance team for billing, a Silicon Valley and Chuck Bass East Coast presence, heck maybe some Europe, Asia and did someone mention Australia ?:)  This is all while as they have thru the life of the company ala Feed Demon/Net News Wire fill the product gap acquisitions and business development deals - with the last acquisition only weeks ago.So it would have been good if Read Write Web had delved a bit deeper than having the assumption that Funding = RIP. Quite the contrary its the opposite; Funding = Oxygen, and for the right company, like Newsgator may be, funding expansion out of working cashflow is sub-optimal than putting the Foundry Group and Co’s venture fund dollars to work.

One day Microsoft will happily swallow both Newsgator and Atlassian (yes this post isn’t about Atlassian but i thought i’d throw it in being a similar size/trajectory/natural end owner), with no change for a billion, which will only double each year, or so - giventake : i could be totally wrong :) Just RWW seemed to make a big call on basis of a company getting funding; It’s competitors dying with it buying the good ones most recently December, and their bet the consumer space (which was swallowed by google quite awhile later than their total bet on enterprise) is merely a loss leader (hullo where is bloglines?) and product r+d for the enterprise space.

So maybe for this post I’ll keep to mashup tools rather than enterprise rss as I’m a sold Polyvore.com fan, not to mention wanting an excuse to link to this orange elbowed pinstriped suitjacket with a twist - Comme Des Garcon jacket. Won’t be getting it anytime as the world is code and dollars; Those who have em’; those who want‘em. And at moment I’m in the latter for both asset classes. If u have a blog, or even a facebook page  where u can directly embed, mini-newspage share etc I wholeheartedly recommend polyvore* if u want a fashion/pictorial remixing tool; I luv the way it embeds the links, graphics and details from the source of the photo you clip via the polyvore bookmarklet, some and easy. The Polyvore bookmarklet also does heavier lifting, with faster importing than others I use than the more buggy Friendfeed, and prone to upgrade issues Delicious bookmarklets.

* Tip to Polyvore Team (feedback / blog) : The only thing I wish I knew is that about 1/3rd of images need u to click a small “Show BG” with scissors icon - that means show background and enables the background to be inverted. I only just figured out that it fixed the images that didnt work. They really should promote/communicate that as I’m sure a stack of other Polyvore members have the same problem, and end up churning the tool as a result.
