Given there is only 1 day left of my self-enforced week off to gather my thoughts so I can hit the ground running for 2009 (there is nothing worse when being self employed, that holidays dont exist in the classic definition, and given no1 is paying me at moment, I needed a week to get my 2009 strategy together, and ability to freshly execute it. Apologies to already back.. but it’s a bit hard to focus when $ are zilch) Anyway, wrapping up my torrents, sneakers, urbanwear fetish as @ m0nty dubbed it, i wouldn’t limit myself just to sneakers, as womyn wouldn’t limit themselves solely to manolos and their jak + jil highrise heelkix.
Not sure when I got into watches, might have been when i first found the Timezone forum (try Breitling forum for an example - Super Avenger model is prob best formal stainless steel watch for impact/class/value under $4k), after purchasing a Raymond Weil W1 chrono on Ebay for a couple hundred bux. I was hooked.. sapphire crystal sure sure is addictive. Watches above range from $600USD Welder (top left black pvd/yellow fluro face) to a few Breitling and Uboats in the $2K-$4k range, then alot in the $5K-$15K entry level good swiss divers ala JLC, Blancpain Rolex Deepsea etc… BTW this list isn’t comprehensive, just clipped from watch blogs I subscribe to in google reader from the last week.

Just as I mention Timezone and Post this Uboat watch one comes up used on Timezone for 850 pounds/$1770 Aussie, pretty damn good, even if it is the 45mm not 53mm diameter, and prob mineral not sapphire crystal it still looks phast and at under $2k it is bomb. good bomb that is it, going off mad bomb. not bomb going off i lost my limb klinger bad. Click Watch for Timezone UK post. And given seller is open to trades, u could prob pick up for 750pounds/$1500 AUD shipped/insured.
I just wish there was a great watch site/community/pricing negotiation tool downunder… that is something I’d like to get involved in 2009 if any1 is interested.. it’s such an inefficient market locally thru combination of online ebay copies passed as genuine with offine Authorised Dealer’s noncomprehensive overpriced stock plus fragmented watch community websites. I know it’s a recession n’all but the rich is still rich after having got richer the last few years. I mean look :
1. Twitter is raising another $20M at $250m or so.. investors reasoning it’s half what Facebook wanted to all stock buy them for. (this is good for industry any healthy funding signs like these, good for sector confidence.. and convince the next investor to participate rather than “sit it out”. Scoble comments this values twitter at $42 per user (not sure if this includes the 3rd party app users which r supposedly bigger than .com uniques?) Techcrunch : “It’s likely they’ll raise more than the $20 million in capital they’ve taken in over two previous rounds. Their last round, raised in June 2008, was a $15 million raise from new investors Spark Capital and Bezos Expeditions. Union Square Ventures and Digital Garage increased their previous investment.”
2. 6 big swinging dks shared in $11B.. in a recent fundraising which puts twitter’s “extravagance” (that being $20m in working capital) in perspective. Via the (was supposed to be much much bigger) little free bit of the Wallstreetjournal online : “Two years ago the founders of Blackstone, Fortress Investment Group and Apollo Management were the toast of Wall Street. Now investors who bought into their vision know what getting toasted really means: Their shareholdings in the listed vehicles are down between 85% and 95%. But not everyone is in the dumps. In 2007, the firms’ key principals – comprising just 11 men — took $6 billion in cash off the table. The combined market value of those three firms today? Roughly $6 billion.”
So I’m more and more impressed by Polyvore, (subscribe to their blog ere) their combination of bookmarklet to clip images, and ability to then create an aggregate embeddable image of your items, with the deep linking incl thumbnail of image and summary description of item really is brilliant. I’m amazed their arent Polyvore like tools for other categories like automotive. Maybe they’ll have an API soon ? So like twitter, there can be a range of mashups from the Polyvore platform ? from Audemars Piguet, Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, Panerai limited editions incl one for Ferrari California droptop, to Jaeger Le Coultre, U-Boat, Welder Diving Watches and one Rolex, a brand I dont like except for a PVD treatment model, and I dont mind the Deepsea Diver hehe - If u dont want a house or latest 911 Porsche, drop a quarter million and have the best watches money can buy !
