On the #Fringe of #TheUnusuals - Consultants, Psychics, Advisors, Brunettes + RichDaddy Complex

Possibly or not, one of the differences b/w creative industries + product based ones is the near undefinable of what makes a hit or success. Otherwise known as the formula. Now I know as I was taught at biz school re innovation it isn’t “wearing a white coat” - but.. cars like Nissan GTR has particular KW, power, 0-100 etc attributes that if delivered with acceptable design will drive X degree of sales.. while creative products may functionally deliver on set requirements..  but get no significant uptake.

The argument can go u need to create something totally new, with a new formula / business model / consumer experience / value equation, to have a chance of becoming The New New Thing.

With TV, a newish model, let’s take Bruckheimer’s CSI as it’s into it’s 9th series.. that took the crime show model, added B-grade film actors, created a really large special effects budget, not to mention showing alot more violence / body parts in the name of Poh-lice work…

So CSI begat CSI Miami, CSI New York. And all the surrouding shows….

But then a formula gets stale, ratings start going down, actors leave.. so Bruckheimer + JJ Abrahams go away from Vegas/violence/pulp_noir/forensics + towards science - which can be put in good and bad hands. Hence why we have #EleventhHour and #Fringe. The former which plays a very straight dry bat with Dr Jackob Hood, and the latter with a  much loved kooky cast around Pacey from OC, Walter Senior - a too funny, beyond smart mad inventor, and Olivia the NIDA trained Aussie who was in White Collar Blue and also the First Series of Mistresses which I wouldnt mind guiltily watching.

The tiredness of forensics/violence as well as the science trend, has led to the rise of the mercurial non police officer whether it be consultant/magician/telepath; You have Toby with Sookie Stackhouse like telepath powers in #TheListener; Patrick Jane the empathy/body language Aussie in The Mentalist; Nathan Fillion the crime novellist on secondment with the Force in #Castle. Sometimes this consultant isimplied to if not have magic powers, to be in the words of this week’s #Fringe episode “Hyper-Emotive”. Combined with a potential backstory that involves family/wife being slaughtered/murdered/killed (The Mentalist had wife/family murdered; The Listener was abused as a child; Eleventh Hour wife died of cancer; Olivia’s backstory on Fringe is only coming to light)

Interesting sub trends in this consultant trend results in a lead police officer : And in most cases it’s female, with rich daddy issues. You may have the lead detective in The Mentalist coupled with Patrick Jane. Castle is bundled with female lead who doesn’t want people knowing she’s a trust fund kid. And in the latest show (as well as #Southland which has been gr8 from start) which is growing on me after an awful pilot : #The Unusuals, where the lead is female, brunette, rich daddy issues again.Via Sepinwall link above : “The “CSI”s and “Law & Order”s and the rest are driven largely by plot. It’s been a while since we’ve had a drama specifically about the culture behind the badge — so, in typical TV fashion, we get two at once: ABC’s “The Unusuals” and NBC’s “Southland.”"

Via CliqueClack : “There’s a new trend of procedurals out there and Castle fits right in. Have you noticed that the best procedurals lately are the ones where it’s not just cops solving the crimes, but “consultants” of some sort? Believe it or not, Psych seems to have started this trend with Shawn and Gus as the Department psychics. The Mentalist has Jane as a consultant, and now Lie to Me is following in their footsteps with a consultant corporation of sorts.”"

Via TVSeries Finale :The creative brains of The Mentalist have learned a few things from television history, particularly Moonlighting. Though lots of fans of the popular series wanted the main characters (played by Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd) to get together, once it happened many lost interest. The series ended 20 years ago next month.. you won’t be seeing Patrick and Teresa getting together any time soon. At the recent Mentalist spotlight at the annual Paley Festival, the actors said that the two characters have very different personalities and approaches to their work. Series creator Bruno Heller said that he believed putting them together would spell the end of the show. As a result, you won’t see any romance between the two — at least until the very end of the series. You’ll also have to wait until the series finale to see the Red John case solved. A serial killer by the name of Red John murdered Patrick’s family five years before the series began. Those who follow the show religiously may have noticed that each episode’s title has some form of the color red in it (Redwood, Scarlett Fever, Red Rum, etc.) — a subtle way of indicating that the killer is always on Patrick’s mind.”

The economics of all this is interesting too, but that’s another whole post : ” “Stuart Baxter, exec VP of distribution at Sony Pictures TV International, points to FX series Damages, which Sony produces and distributes. “It’s a show that has done critically very well almost everywhere it’s appeared, and it’s also been a big marketing hook almost everywhere it’s launched,” he says, citing networks like Canal+ in France and SBS in Holland. “Because it’s high-brow, intense and serialised, buyers don’t target it for massive audiences. They target it more for a higher-brow demo that they’re trying to draw into the channel.” Baxter, who also represents other FX titles The Shield and Rescue Me, and A&E’s Patrick Swayze vehicle The Beast, says the growth of digital networks with narrower demographic targets has also helped in placing cable shows with terrestrial buyers. The Beast, for instance, is sold in 11 EMEA countries including to RTE in Ireland, Five USA in the UK and Channel 1 in Russia; Damages is sold in 34 EMEA countries including to M6 and Canal+ in France, SBS in the Netherlands”"

OK that’s my deconstructing of trends.. the $64K question is always not analysing what is now, but what is next.. but something always does come next.. and according to Dave Winer’s Gartner’s Curve piece suggests what comes next will gain adoption even faster than Twitter has currently, as whatever is next will utilise Twitter, and the live web to be shared around and tested. Scoble has a pretty good go at suggesting what is next too

#Fringe has Massive Dynamics; #Dollhouse The Rossum Corporation + #Chuck: Fulcrum +Sarah +Orion

Chuck series 1 thought was a cute post OC piece merging nerdworld with yer classic catch bad guys formula… but :

The second half of Chuck S2 is the much better part (just as with Fringe’ Massive Dynamics meta-plot (parent company details ere) and The transnational beyond escorting Dollhouse Rossum Corporation conspiracy - more interesting background ere), is the larger Fulcrum Conspiracy.

It’s just kept escalating in a good way, the show, with Chuck finding out his Dad is Orion, who planted The Intersect in his head, and that father/son are the major chess pieces in the world’s survival.

Anyway, Chuck has been raising the roof, and also like many other series, the penultimate series episode is the one with all the reveals, drama etc as the last one is often used as a setup/bridge for episode 1 of the next series +/or to clean things up with characters…

Or even worse, create new total changes, and leave cliffhangers for next time - If there is a next time with Chuck. Could this be the end ?

Let’s hope not, firstly that they save the show and it isn’t cancelled, even if Chuck does have to put the Intersect back in his headwhy would Sarah stay with him if he wasn’t the Intersect, and how do u make a TV show out of it : “Hi Dear, how was your day ?”

Anyway once u have watched chuck S2E20 well this is what I do, I read Sepinwall’s review which really is, as it is every week fn excellent. His commenters are fantastic too. Why I read them at 230am when trying to sleep I’m not sure of the Freudian analysis there… or just watch Gossip/Girl and Castle together to get an East Coast establishment hit.

Alternatively again, read New York Magazine’s Rage of the Rich : “Everyone on Wall Street is prepared to lose money. Bankers have expressions for disastrous losses: clusterfuck, Chernobyl, blowing up … But no one was prepared to lose money this way. This felt like getting mugged.”

So you can read this gr8 rant over at theawl : “Sherman’s piece is generously bedecked with self-pitying anonymous quotes from indignant traders and bankers to bear out this clinical view. (They are also, one surmises, the link bait that has made Sherman’s story the most frequently emailed on the magazine’s site; it turns out that the preppy magazine class, no less than “canny politicians” can make with the strategically leveraged “populist rage.”) But really, these clueless whingeing sentiments are the pulpy B-roll footage here; yes, these are hypocrites who seem to have forgotten that their “industry” owes its continued existence to a titanic government bailout; yes, it’s easy to hate on the going-Galt rhetoric of Sherman’s nameless Spartacuses of the are-not revolt (“JP Morgan and all these guys should go on strike,” one fumes, “see what happens to the country without Wall Street”; “The government wants me to be a slave,” another laments, contemplating the horror of the return of Clinton-era tax rates).”

U-Boat Basel 09 Models, and they have an All Black Classico Model Of Course !

U-Boat Basel 09 Models, and they have an All Black Classico Model Of Course ! U-Boat forum founder (i assume) speaking to U-Boat founder : "He asked me what I would think about the new watches and I gave him my opinion on these and he was very happy to get such a feedback (feedback see below, with presentation of the single watches). He told me that he is very happy with what we are doing with the forum and he said that he wants to work close together with us in the future, giving us all new and in-depth information before others get them. For example he told me that they are currently working on a one-off watch for Arnold Schwarzenegger, a massive gold watch with the crown right! This was a special request by him and they will do this as a custom order. I will get pictures of this when they return from Basel. As said, he is a very nice person and he is real great designer. The company currently employs 25 people."

So I’m grokkn some but not all of the U-Boats at Basel.. like the All-Black above my fave. Although All-Black is the signature of Hublot.. now stolen by nearly all watchmakers. But then why not eat yer own lunch + for once Omega a watch that usually bores to me to tears and is worn by people who cant afford an entry level Rolex Submariner… well the PloProf has the works - Awesome kitsche silver band, little 70’s Jacques Cousteau collaboratively developed buttons coming out of the dive to bottom of the ocean watch. Pity it’s $10K aussie. From Watchismo : “Omega announces the 2009 Professional Ploprof Diver developed in conjunction with famed diver Jacques Cousteau. Technical Specifications:

* Movement: Co-Axial Caliber 8500
* Case: Stainless Steel, Water resistant to 1200 meters + Sapphire bezel and crystal
* Bi-directional rotating bezel with security push-button lock for the bezel + Screwed-in and protected crown at 9
* Special Seamaster medallion on the case-back with grooved wave-pattern + Bracelet: New Omega mesh SHARK-PROOF bracelet or rubber strap (black or orange) that can be adjusted for wearing over the diving suit (can be up to 7mm thick thanks to a double extension system), a new sliding clasp, capable of fine adjustments…”

And they said people wouldnt be able to read the time.. well for $5k euros who wants to.. or in Hublot case many times more. Poor Alison in #underbelly u know it’s not going to end well…

Some random but liked links below, I need cawfee as the house is out.. and while Earl Grey used to do it for me, I admit I am powerless. Enable me oh sponsor I am krunked on the junk and I need my cawfee beans made with full cream organic milk from Warnabool.

Rick Owens Funnell Leather Jacket £1976.00 : "Another amazing leather jacket from Rick Owens... Made from tyvek pasted over leather it graduates in colour from light grey to black. Leather is intentionally distressed with cracks and tears naturally occurring at the waist. Arms are full black with a ribbed knit cuff, neck is an exaggerated funnel. There are four external pockets, each with a nylon pull tag and two internal pockets close with a zip." From Oki-Ni.

“.. Advertising pulls you more deeply into the fashion system than I’m willing to go. I have enough, and my business is growing at a pace that’s gradual enough to be safe, yet fast enough to be motivating. And advertising’s another job, like runway shows. Once you start, you need to be ready to do it forever. That being said, I never thought I’d be doing runway shows.”

Some of the last nites viewing, with #Castle becoming one of my fave Tuesday night shows, goes perfect with Upper East Side Gossip Girl for a nonauthentic hit of NY. I have a count of how many days it will take to bring to Australia ie The Hit Factor Lag Downunder

Oh The Mumbrealla Starcom Translator is very funny btw,  I cant remove myself from the fact that my first job was in an agency - DDB - in “New Media Development” !

Mumbrella spoofing around (it’s funny coz it’s true): “They won’t have to worry about deadlines while their colleagues run round like blue-arsed flies. And no matter how much it looks like they’re surfing the Internet for weird shit, it’s all for work. Honestly.

“The consumer landscape is increasingly complex and leveraging humanity in marketing has a critical impact on our clients’ and brands’ effectiveness. The changes we’ve made to Genesis are designed to deliver more meaningful brand experiences for our clients within the human dimension,” SMG CEO John Sintras said.

“Have you noticed how everyone’s on Twitter these days?” said boss John Sintras.

Google wants to cut out VC’s and has launched a fund. Now if they could just cut out the entrepreneur and management team. Then World Domination ! Via Industry Standard quoting Fred :One time gains in corporations don’t make anyone rich. Wall Street ignores the gain. The company can’t put the gain into the pocket of its management. So it just doesn’t matter very much,” he wrote on his blog.” - BB : Last time around when groups like Newscorp tried to be a 1.0 efund… well it plain failed.. they should def stick to acquisition.. and having employees leave, start friendfeed like Co’s then google can buy em… easy. Its a healthy ecosystem like that !

The amazing show (again it did win Best Actor ahead of Draper) is Breaking Bad Series 2. S2E4 wow it starts slow as always… and then bam Jessie’s homeless and Walt’s wife walks out mid one of his lies. But gives him a taste of his medicine by leaving for hours then coming back with no explanation. Tit4Tat is gonna end with a bang!

It’s not just #Breaking Bad in fact #United States of Tara is up there or ahead with Breaking Bad on itst topic of family relations. If u dont watch it and u r into this type of thing u have to..

“sociology, biology, psychology, philosophy, architecture, media, technology, feminism.”* : Some Meta Societal Links, as u can tell this post has no structure, narrative. Like here I’ll just dump these buzzwords and see if u can guess who wrote them or meta’ised em.

$155 for this suit jacket in Yanks bux.. that really is cheap.. and $105 for pants.. wow thats the price of a pair of Supra kix and a tshirt and way less than the Common Projects Safaris I want. But can u order a suit from Australia, in America, by online.. guess u can get centimetres and all those measurements things.

Good products and brands always have attention to detail.. For a $260 suit this type of detail is usually in suits 3-4 times the price. Which is pretty much how Cheap Monday position themselves in the jeans market. Very interesting their strategy : Create an indie brand with anti authoritarian values that mines last season’s kewl but classic items (skinny jeans, now suits and sunglasses) - Then cheaply produce items without having too broad a product line, as u want it to respond to trends.. Offer items 3 times cheaper than market. Start with Jeans as trojan horse.. then expand into other categories. It’s a pity Aussie brands like Country Road and Saba havent been able to take a bit more of the thinking of Cheap Monday to build market share.. (not that Im saying they need to sell kewl $65 jeans but it would be a start)

Black or blue, the blue is definitely unique.. black is a prerequisite in any cupboard.. and I do need a new one.. but I’d prob go blue coz it’s unique or if I had money bnoth !

“.. PaidContent reported that if Disney were to do a deal, it would take a 30% stake in Hulu and become and equal partner to NBC Universal and News Corp. That means like NBC and News Corp before it, Disney would agree to spend $50 million marketing the site.” Below was last nites run, I actually worked late… and wanted to go to gym but was too late, the beach was a treat yo!

* Come to think of it, Toni Collette in second series sof United States of Tara could play a gr8 Julia Allison complete with multiple personality disorder.. and like Tara in her advanced latter stages of Series 1 - there could be a battle between the alternate personalities.. and Gimme would come out to play.. if u dont watch United States of Tara then there’s no point explaining suffice to say.. its about multiple personalities in the one body. OK I really need cawfee.. apologies for this post, just look at pictures and then go back to work already; If you dont do it youself, u have to fo it yourself. U r the rock.

How Many Days Behind is Free to Air TV in Australia ?

Poker Game Amongst Authors

Not all TV shows, websites, heck insert any creative project are created equal. What makes Buffy rule but Dollhouse suck ? Why does Simon Baker have the most popular new TV show in The Mentalist now as opposed to his previous shows ? It’s a very fine line between a home run and an almost ran. It happens in all creative areas : If you follow sports it’s the same there. TV Tonight have the Dramatic Clock formula.

With that as the assumption, I kinda agree with CliqueClack about why first ep just out Castle (who like the Criminal Minded annoying profiler is an author but thankfully Castle is a crime fiction author not an FBI employed serial killer profiling one) will be a big hit; “My prediction is that Castle will be a hit; not just a “hey, that’s a pretty good show” hit, but a “this is one of the best new shows of the season” hits.

So if u believe that assumption, I am wondering how long it will take for David Gyngell, Ian Law + those in programming at Channel 9 or any other FTA network in Australia to take a punt on Castle. They really need something to run after Underbelly for starters. I really wish they would play the Patrick Swayze helmed The Beast as that would be perfect tone to Underbelly… but well i wont hold my breath even if it is farely mainstream and does have a Melbourne well Geelong born country lead Ex CK model Travis Fimmel. My hope would be they are trackking twitter search trends, torrent downloads, webstream metrics - all with geo-demographic breakdowns.. and deciding which shows to pick and which to ditch.

[chuck-lethal1.jpg]

When u think of the millions of dollars spent by TV networks on such decisions, the rating impacts, the marketing budgets spent when u cant make a dog sing… basically they could pick alot more winners by tracking this… well or getting someone to do it for them - U get what I mean.. u could use numbers, rather than pay some1 for Cannes gut feels. Just watching US ratings at start is no use either as shows like The Mentalist now doing 20m a week.. dont do that right at the start when u want to get the rights… bu twittter and download trends to get immediate buzz, rankings, quant relative usage. See it’s easy :

Pick - Castle

Ditch - Dollhouse

Pick - The Beast

Ditch - The Minder UK remake

Pick - Chuck Series 2 (which bte S2E16 was a classic last night)

Ditch - Chuck - Series 1

and so on….

Grab the first ep of Castle if u like The Mentalist.. Castle is a no-brainer.

Grab the first ep of Castle if u like The Mentalist.. Castle is a no-brainer.

The Castle FTA_AU Test :

I’m going to count how many days / weeks / months it takes for Castle to come out downunder, its not that I think it’s briliant (um is Australia going to get the S2 of fn brilliant #damages btw?) But Castle would rate off the hook aussiewise… so how long does it take Ian Law, etc to respond ?:) My point being if TV networks tracked online buzz (twitter, blog, webstreams views, torrent downloads.. they would get a good indicator of popularity and likely success ere esp if u ran .au IP filtering across the research sample + obviously normalised it due to the geeky male skew of such utilities)

Watch : Castle S1E1 ere.

Tucco + The Blue Magic of #breakingbad S2

Series 2 of Breaking Bad with the amazing (ive totally forgotten) best acting emmy winning Malcom’s Dad - You can get the first 3 eps online #BreakingBad S2E1.E2.E3, butt along with interviews, they really feel like the conclusion to Series 1, than the start of S2. That said, Breaking Bad is awesome if u havent seen Season 1 get it. The cop from the closer as the “Blue Magic” Meth DrugKingPin Tucco is an absolute classic. Speaking of real creativity how’s this as a start to reading the script after doing Malcom in the MIddle for too many year$ from gr8 NJ piece linked above:

But with Vince’s script, I picked it up and read, A guy in tighty-whitey underwear, he’s got a respirator on, he’s driving a Winnebago. Two dead bodies are sliding back and forth,” and I’m like, “What the fuck? What? What?” And I had to catch up! I had to catch up! And that was his lure. He was just fishing. And before you know it, you’re engrossed, and I read it cover to cover without stopping.”

Oops i did it again.
